The Area Rug Guide

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Area rugs are decorating staples. If you haven’t realized yet that area rugs can transform any room in a snap, it’s time to get out of your slumber and start looking around. Almost, if not all homes and offices have area rugs as a decor and floor covering. Why, even my public library’s receiving area has an area rug to welcome the booklovers.

Allow me to guide you in your quest for the ideal area rug. There’s an area rug for every person as we consider personal preferences and design taste. Also, an area rug for every home as themes and styles vary.

Whatever type rug you are pondering, make sure that it will fit in the space where you intend to use it. Use a tape measure to measure the area, then measure the area that would be covered by the rug. Visualize what the rug would look like. Take various measurements until you are satisfied with the size of area you want your rug to cover. Taking measurements increases the chances of being happy with the first rug you buy.

In deciding an area to cover with an area rug, consider factor like floor vents, electrical outlets, door openings and such. The coast is clear, as they say for putting an area rug to achieve maximum decorating results. Bumps, unevenness and fire are by no means unwelcome.

Area rugs work best for high traffic areas. Strategically place a rug on a spot that is often used. Examples are the door entrance, under the table and chairs, the “sitting on the floor” space, in front of a painting, in front of the sink and under heavy furnishings.

Utilize a rug pad to prevent slipping accidents particularly in the bathroom and on marble flooring. The pad also helps prolong the quality of the rug as it prevents easy wear and tear of the material.

You may want to use an area rug to hide a problem floor area. You may be searching for a rug to accentuate an area. Area rugs are very versatile and can be used in all sorts of ways. Some rugs are simply too beautiful to step on and make wonderful wall art.

Choosing area rugs become trouble-free if you base your decision on the things you like. It can be a color, material or design. Moreover, basing your choices on the theme you already have will give you clues as to which color, shape, design, etc. of area rugs match your home the best.

Enjoy a pleasurable and beautiful home living with area rugs around.

Decorating Tips For Homes With Hardwood Floors

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

I love hardwood flooring. I think it looks elegant and timeless. Ancestral homes are usually in hardwood flooring and they look so classy. I like the sound of the click clacking of shoes on the floor. So posh!

Furniture in pale or light colors look best with hardwood floor. The contrast provides an interesting interior. For instance, a sofa in white or neutral color looks clean amidst a dark flooring. Bright furnishings meanwhile, like in shades of red, blue or green may seem too flashy but the burst of color actually makes a room more lively. The vivid colors oppose the rich brown flooring that gives the space a more riveting appearance.

Your lamps and drapes can be colors based on the throw pillows or maybe even to match a throw across the back of the chair to give it an added color. Golds, browns, tans and olive greens are dark rich colors that you can use for a den or a family room. Placing a rug in front of the fireplace in a color from the drapes or the throws will also pull some more color into the room.

To decorate the hardwood floor, area rugs are ideal. Carpeting covers the entire floor while area rugs only eat up sections of the floor. Usually, it’s in the center of the room as a focal piece or in high-traffic spots to prevent floor damage.

If you have hardwoods in the entire house including the bedroom, you might want to consider either a rug to cover the center of the floor and each side of the bed, or just some runner type rugs along the sides and at the foot of the bed. These help to keep it warmer and you won’t be so shocked when climbing out of the bed in the early morning hours. Runner type rugs don’t have to be real plush, but just something simple to step out on. The good thing about runner rugs is that there are easy to roll up and put away for the spring and summer time of the year when they aren’t necessarily needed any more.

Protect your hardwood floor and beautify it at the same time with area rugs. Accent the flooring with pretty decors and suitable furniture. Be assured that your home will always have that classy look often associated with hardwood flooring regardless of how understated or bright your choice of colors get.

A Contemporary Rug For Your Home

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

A rug can make a stunning difference to the look of your home. Not only will the right contemporary rug add a great look to the floor, helping to tie together the room’s decor, it will also add an element of warmth and softness along with its undeniable elegance.

Area rugs come in many different shapes, sizes, styles, and colors. You also have to determine what type of material will best suite your lifestyle depending on which room the area rug will be used.

Contemporary rugs will give you that modernism style to your home and give you another color to use in your design. There are many different materials to choose from such as Silk, Wool, Persian, Moroccan, and Oriental. If you are someone who loves the environment and doesn’t like anything which isn’t man made, natural fiber area rugs may be the choice to go with.

Before heading out to the store on search of your perfect area rug you may want to go online and look in home magazines to give you a basic idea of what is out there. If you find one online you may want to purchase it since many are cheaper online rather than in local stores. Just make sure you are sure of the size before purchasing.

Contemporary rugs placed properly in a rooms design will give it that finished look along with an addition to the artistic design. You want the rug to be itself rather than stick out or blend with its surroundings.

Patterns sometimes can be tricky when choosing an area rug unless you have a clean slate. By designing the design around a patterned contemporary area rug which you love might be your best bet. Geometric patterns are an easy pattern to work around if the design already exists in the room.

Bolder pattern rugs or animal patterns are another version of contemporary styled area rugs. Oriental designs are a great addition to any style you have in your home but you will spend a few extra bucks. Oriental rugs are also sometimes available for personalizing in some rug companies. You can tell them what type you are looking for and they’ll be able to create something for you. But of course it will cost you.

When shopping for a contemporary rug, plan what will look best in the floor space where it will be proudly be on display. Also bear in mind what kind of usage it will get. If it is going to be exposed to a lot of foot traffic, then something of a higher quality will naturally have a longer life. For something that is used purely as an accent for a room, more delicate materials may be able to be employed for that extra touch of contemporary style.

Higher quality area rugs are a great purchase if it is for a more trafficked room such as the entry way of the home, bathroom, or hallway. It will take a better beating rather than a softer more poor quality area rug.

Rug decorating is easy when you use the right rugs. These area rugs work well with all decors.

Using An Area Rug To Make A Quick Change

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Next to a fresh coat of paint, one of the easiest ways to liven up your room decor is to bring in a new area rug. But how do you choose the right rug and use it to best advantage? Consider the following guidelines.

You need to first determine how much you can afford to pay for your area rug. If you like to change the look in your room often don’t spend as much money. But if you are going for a family heirloom then spend a little more money as well as time looking for the right rug.

Now you need to determine what size you will need. All experts agree that it is important to leave around 18 inches to three feet of empty space between the rug and wall in most of your rooms. This allows for the door to open easily. There is an exception to this rule; if the rug is in the dining room then you need to get measurements of the table and then add four feet to each side. This extra space will allow you to move the chairs around without going off the rug.

You also need to decide on a pattern as well as a color. If you already have a pattern in the room then choose the rug carefully. If you don’t have a pattern yet you need to use a solid color. Before you go shopping you need to take a sample of the upholstery or drapery that you want to match the rug with.

Do you want the rug to be the focal point? Rugs can make a big difference in the room. If the rug is going to be the focal point it needs a strong central design like a medallion or another bold pattern. If the rug is not going to be a focal point then it should blend in with the current decor. Harmony should be the key. The rug should be different shapes or sizes so it can give the room a visual interest. You will also need to purchase a proper rug liner so the rug doesn’t slip.

Now think about how the rug is to be used. Rugs are so versatile they can perform many functions in home decor.

* Use an area rug to separate an area. * Use an area rug to offset the color scheme. If you use bold color the tone the color of the area rug down. * Use a small rug to hang on the wall for art decor. * If you are using neutral colors on the walls and upholstery then you need to use a rug with a bold color. * Carefully choose the shape of the rug to blend in with your furniture. Remember that traditionally rectangular rugs will fit anywhere but you can change things up with an oval rug.

With so many choices, it’s bound to take you a while to find the rug that will perfectly transform your decor. But what fun you’ll have looking for it!
